Return of the Ankh

Xavier Ness
The inspiration for this photo derived from a new way of thinking. I was influenced by Pan-Africa, and the spiritual aspects of the theme. The word ‘Ulimwengu’ is Swahili for Universe; this term exemplified the vastness of spirituality for me. I wanted to convey my subject in a certain manner. Strength, ethnicity, and definition. My ten year old sister served as my subject, we teased her hair which naturally framed her face and I applied red acrylic paint to her neck down to her shoulders and loosely swiped her face with the paint. She is wrapped in a south African fabric, a present given to me in junior high. When I released this photo, my distant family applauded me. This photo represents self acceptance and exploration into spirituality.

This photo is very interesting and draws my attention. The subject is dressed and adorned beautifully. Its hard for me to fathom that she's only ten. The composition is wonderful, but the only critique I have is that the background be slightly more diverse. Otherwise, this is a beautiful piece.

I love this picture. More or less I love all the pictures that you put up on here. You did a very good job of capturing your idea of spirituality. The way your sister is positioned makes her look more mature and that she is proud to express herself any way she wants too.

I love your inspiration for this photo! It gives a deep feeling for the culture and spirituality. I also like the deeper colors. The dark shadows, the deep red, and the light all contrast very well, and the green gives it a nice pop of color to compliment the red.
