These photos were taken for the Photo I monthly theme: Games. There is NO digital enhancement, the lighting effects were accomplished with colored light bulbs and a glass chess set. The exposure time was between 8 and 20 seconds for the different light bulbs against a dark background. I have an idea about which I like the best, but want feedback with your thoughts.
UPDATE: The purple (black light) and red are really NOT blurry in the original photo - just when uploaded to Blogspot.

Though a bit blurry, the red one is the most interesting. It looks like the pieces are about to have a battle. The way the black pieces are only dark outlines looks really sinister and cool. But you should have foucused the camera with some extra lights on. Also, you could zoom in a little closer. Focus is really important so that you can see the cool lighting effect.
Out of the three of the photos I like the green one the best. The purple and red ones are a little blurry. The black background on the green lighted one is very nice; it makes the chess pieces stand out. The picture is clear and in focus. Good job _______.
I like this photo a lot. I love how it is reflecting off of the board and such and how vibrant the green is. Good job.
Nice lighting bud. The green really makes it look elegant. The reflection on the glass board looks awesome. The picture is a little crooked, but it can be changed easily.
I Really like the way these photos turned out, but I would have to say that the green one is my favorite because it is so bright and in really good focus. Great Job on this assignment you really made the game pieces come to life. The only one that I'm not sure about is the Purple ones. I dont know if there suppose to be blurry or what. But over all good job.
Those pictures are so cool! In my opinion, the purple light's composition looks better than the rest, the green light has the best focus, but the red light has the most interesting lighting. The green photo could improve with a different perspective because the pieces on the side are just cut off. I personally like the purple photo more than the others because it looks like a spotlight on the game, which enhances dramatization of chess. It could use a little more focus, though. The red light looks cool because of the black chess pieces in front of the white ones. This is a great experiment, Meyerhoff. I like them all! :)
Great photo and good idea. Never would have thought to have done that. My favorite would have to be the green photo because of the sharp image and the reflection it has. I will have to try this sometime.

These pictures are great. thinking up of this and usind different angles was genius. i like how vibrant the green one is. and the red shot is so dramatic, it looks really epic at that angle. the purple does not grab me as much but i really like the subjects and lighting.
The lights and the reflections off of the board are awesome. I like thegreen one the best when they are all in focus.Good Job.
All the photos are very cool. I like idea of the picture and how it turns out. The picture that I like the most is the green chess set because it shows the reflection of the chess pieces.

I like the picture of the green pieces because the reflection is almost as vivid as the real pieces themselves and you had a great perspective.

Very nice execution of this game theme. The colored light really adds to the subject.

Well well well,
Always on my back about not taking enough photos, what about you? Why have you been hiding your amazing skills from everyone all darn year? Good job i'd like to see the original ones of the purple and red lighted ones. Well done PAPA HOFF.

Nice shots. Each is good for different reasons but the one that I think has the most potential would be the green one. It has great light, tack on focus and a good reflection. The flaw in it is the composition. I think you need to rotate the image so the pieces are exactly vertical and then crop in on the KQpp group. I would eliminate the left and right pieces. It is unfortunate that the top of the kings reflection is cut out but since it is I would probably cut a bit more from the reflection so it looks intentional.
The green one is my favorite because i like the way you can see the shadows and how clear the shot came out. This was creative and it looks real nice.
I really like the effects you created in these photos. It’s amazing what a bit of colored light can accomplish. I personally like the red one as it gives a nice contrast with the black pieces in the foreground and kind of an eerie mysterious effect. The green one is great as well because of it’s clarity and reflections. Great job and keep up the good work!
nice, picture i really like the coloring you did for each one
